Okay maybe not quite, but Fifth Harmony represents a diversity I haven’t seen in a pop group in a while. The group’s made up of young Women of Colour – Lauren, Camila, Normani, Ally and Dinah –  who aren’t waif thin and pull off sexy without it being raunchy [Which might have something to do with the fact that it seems most of them are fairly young but hey, this is the entertainment industry so it’s still a bit of a shock].

The group was assembled by The X Factor creator and judge Simon Cowell, who also brought together One Direction, and is set to reach their level of success, or better, as time goes by.

BO$$ – Which I consider their first “mature” single – is upbeat, inspirational and downright fierce! “Michelle Obama/Purse so heavy getting Oprah dollars/” goes the chorus and I love the fact that they cited Black women as role models – It says plenty!

For me, my appreciation for them isn’t just about their music, it’s about what they represent. I was ecstatic to discover a group of realistic looking young women making empowering music that can be consumed by both an 8 year old girl and a middle aged woman – and have the same positive effect on them both. It’s always lovely to see women uplifting other women as best as they can, and with this here song, and their image,  Fifth Harmony’s doing it right.
