Britain’s premier hip hop and grime tastemaker DJ Charlie Sloth launches his first compilation instalment. Hood Heat Vol. 1 is set for release on 24th November 2014 through Naughty Boy’s imprint on Virgin Records.

Celebrating Charlie’s first year heading up Radio 1’s seminal Saturday Night Rap show, alongside his legendary BBC 1xtra shows, Hood Heat Vol. 1 features his authoritative selection of this year’s finest hip hop and grime cuts. Essential listening for 2014 the compilation will be split across 2 discs and brings together an eclectic mix of this year’s biggest tracks alongside specially commissioned exclusive cuts.

27 year old Charlie was born and raised in the cultural melting pot of London’s Camden Town. He began his career as an MC with a radio show on the leading London pirate radio station. In 2007 he stepped up his game when he began to make his own records.  Not content just to write, produce, record and release his solo output, Charlie got hold of a camera and began making his own shows, capturing the life of an independent British Rap artist with his online weekly show ‘Being Charlie Sloth.’ Combining reportage, guest stars, comedy skits and hidden camera pranks, the show was picked up by World Star Hip Hop and has gone on to become the most viewed weekly Hip Hop show in the world averaging over 1 Million views a week.

In 2010 Charlie joined the BBC 1Xtra line up with the Friday Hip Hop M1X and began making his mark on the station. He soon began hosting the Saturday morning show on BBC 1xtra too and Monday’s late night’s on Radio1 in early 2012. He started his current 4-7pm weekday show in September 2012 and in September 2013 he took over Radio 1’s legendary Saturday night hip-hop show from Tim Westwood, making Charlie the new premier tastemaker for hip hop in the UK. His primetime Saturday Night Rap show on BBC 1Xtra features his renowned ‘Fire in the Booth’ slot which showcases freestyles from the finest MCs from both sides of the pond. It is grime and hip hop at its best – unexpected, darkly funny and ripe for endless adaptation. From Danny Brown freestyling over Earl Sweatshirt’s Chum to veteran Today programme presenter John Humphreys proving his street credentials, Charlie Sloth’s shows are discussed on and offline for days, weeks, months. Unsurprising then that it has now become the most listened to radio show on BBC Radio 1Xtra.

Fittingly Titled Hood Heat Vol. 1, Charlie Sloth’s forthcoming compilation combines a selection of the artists that Charlie has championed on the radio and in the clubs throughout the year and features some of the biggest jams to come out of the UK and US in 2014. Charlie wanted to make this compilation with the intention of bringing the UK closer than ever to making a clear statement in Hip Hop on a global scale, claiming that: “I’ve always wanted to be part of the UK steam train that breaks artists in America and the world. With the position I’m currently in, I’m at a point in my life and my career that can help push this message over the finishing line better than anyone else in the past. I wanted to highlight that a UK rap record can play back to back with a US rap record without pulling the *awkward* face. Our levels of production, our depth of content, flow and character in our rap artists is on par, there is no more “UK Hip Hop”, just Hip Hop.”

The compilation ranges from Future and André 3000’s ‘Benz Friendz’, Drake’s ‘0-100 The Catch Up’ and ‘Cry’ by Rick Ross featuring Lil Wayne to ‘That’s Not Me’ by Skepta  (ft, JME), Meridian Dan’s ‘German Whip’ and the Ghetts and Giggs collaboration on ‘Gas Mark 9’. In keeping with Charlie’s reputation for championing new music, there are four brand new exclusive tracks personally commissioned by him. These include ‘Look Like’ by Charlie Sloth himself featuring JMC, Jadakiss & Stormzy and ‘Do It Big’ by Naughty Boy feat J Spades, Ghetts and Bashy.

Charlie Sloth’s Hood Heat Vol. 1 will be released on 24th November 2014 by Naughty Boy Records/Virgin.
