Happy New Year!

2017 is already looking like it’s going to be an extra-ordinary year specifically for women. And I’m saying this with a full assurance despite Hillary Clinton’s loss to President Elect Donald Trump. Another story for another issue.

Right now it’s all about covering a milestone and changing the status-quo for the 2017 woman. Every woman at one point in her life will be met with damning consequences of fulfilling the need of their career with societal expectations and stereotyping; being called wayward and a non-marriage material.

Successful hardworking women are constantly haunted by both her family, colleagues, and even fellow women to condense to submissive, helpless attitude, to be seen as humble and to fit into the box which the society; depending on your location) has made for you. If you are independent, rich and influential, God help you if you are still single or worse still if you are a single mother, then you must have been selling your body to make it.

In this issue however, our women at the top have redefined the storyline. Their individual and collective stories are changing the perception that women can be successful without tagging behind marriage or a man.

These ladies are breaking barriers, brick by brick, day by day and ladder by ladder, changing the narrative for every woman in 2017.

Our cover girl, Funke Abimbola was once told to steer clear of corporate law as this area of legal practice was “too competitive for a black woman”. She was not fazed, rather she doubled up her efforts. Now she’s a multi-award winning solicitor, currently the most senior black lawyer working within the UK pharmaceutical industry and is one of the most senior globally. She is a senior leader for the world’s largest biotech company, a practising solicitor leading the legal and corporate compliance, company secretarial and data protection functions that support the company’s pharmaceutical operations in the UK, Ireland, Malta and Gibraltar.

Funke’s story is not just empowering, but also a huge step forward to creating that balance in the diversity narrative.

Also in this issue, we bring you two hardworking women in our start-up series, Chioma Nnani and Lindani Moyo are diligently building their brands one day at a time. Personally, starting my own business 4 years ago has been the most fulfilling decision I’ve ever made, except of course saying yes to Mr handsome.
