Akindolie Medical scholarship
BAME medical students can now apply for the 2017 Akindolie scholarship.
Application for the 2017 Akindolie medical scholarship established in 2016 by the Akindolie family to honour their father,
the late Dr. Frank Olufemi Akindolie, opens on Saturday 1st April.

The 2017 scholarship
will comprise 1 financial bursary of £1,500 together with a structured, year long mentoring programme. It will be awarded to a medical student who is currently studying medicine at a UK medical school and is from a minority ethnic background.

Funke Abimbola (nee Akindolie), founder of the scholarship said: “Our father was a gifted, German trained doctor who built up a successful medical practice in Nigeria. He tragically died of liver
cancer almost 5 years ago. We wanted to establish something permanent in our father’s name here in the UK, specifically to encourage future doctors”

Continuing, she said; “Although I chose to become a lawyer, I come from a family of doctors. Morale amongst junior hospital doctors in the UK is at an all-time low due to the challenges of working in an overly burdened healthcare system. By doing this, we hope to encourage and support future doctors to remain committed to their medical careers despite the challenges they face”.

The winner of the 2016 scholarship was Folashade Oyewole, a 5th
year medical student at Imperial College, London.

To qualify, candidates will need to be studying at a UK medical school on a full time basis with a strong academic record and a demonstrable commitment to giving back to society outside their medical studies. Whilst priority will be given to students at medical school in London or Newcastle (“both being locations where my younger siblings attended medical school”, explains Abimbola), all UK-based
medical students are welcome to apply and will be considered.

Applications close on 31st
August 2017.

The scholarship will be awarded by the end of September 2017.
