MAN CITY: THIS SEASON’S FORMIDABLE CHAMPIONS

  • Community Shield winners.
  • The league cup winners
  • Winning the premier league
  • Road to FA cup success.

Man City dominance this season makes them no doubt the best in the country at the moment. This statement is evident in how they have completely won all the major trophies in English football this season. They have a good coach in Pep Guardiola

Premier league legend, Alan Shearer said: “they want more – more goals and more trophies. And the way they go about getting them is what makes them different from the other great English sides of the modern era. I played against Man U’s treble winners of 1998-99 and Arsenal’s invincible of 2003-04, so I know how good they were – city is doing something new, that we have not seen here before”.

COMMUNITY SHIELD WINNERS

Man City defeated Chelsea on 5th August 2018 to win the community shield. This match came too early for Chelsea, as their new manager,  Maurizio Sarri was yet to settle.

The Blues set out to play from the back with Jorginho, critical to the system, but City gave them no breathing space. The first goal came through Kun Aguero, as he drilled a left-footed shot into the bottom comer. This was Aguero 200th goal in sky blue shirt. Chelsea felt uninterested as they remained toothless in attack. Aguero doubled the lead not quite long. Chelsea responded by bringing on Willian, Drinkwater, and Tammy Abraham to see if there could be any change in the team performance but things remained the same. In the end, the two goals from Aguero became the difference between the two sides.

THE LEAGUE CUP WINNERS

City started their campaign on 25 September 2018 on the high as it was about time to defend the title they won last season,  beating Oxford United 3goals to nothing.

Manchester City continued their fine form in the competition by beating Fulham, Leicester City, Burton Albion in the fourth round, quarterfinal, and semifinal respectively to face Chelsea in the final. The final against Chelsea ended goalless on full time as both teams failed to score. The match went to penalties as City defeated Chelsea 4 – 3 on penalties to retain the trophy.

WINNING THE PREMIER LEAGUE

Man City became the first club in 10 years to win the Premier League back to back. City 98 points were enough to beat Liverpool to second on 97 points. Man City picked it from where they stopped last season in the Premier League during the start of the campaign. They went from one win to another except the two draws they had on 25th August and 7th October against Wolves and Liverpool respectively.

City league season hit a rock when they lost three games in four games against Chelsea, Crystal Palace, and Leicester City in December. At this point, Liverpool was unplayable, uncatchable, and clear ahead of City in terms of points. We thought it was over for Man City, we were already thinking it was going home for Liverpool. City needed redemption, they needed to go back to winning ways. They found that against Southampton. Up next was Liverpool, they got to show the world it is not over yet until it is over. They played the Reds at the right time. Manchester City won the match 2goals to 1. The belief was back, from that game till the end of the season; City gained all maximum three points except for the match they lost against Newcastle United on 29 January.

Liverpool, on the other hand, was dropping points in games they could have won. It was at this time Man City retook the lead on the log table and maintained it till the very end.

ROAD TO FA CUP SUCCESS

City defeated Rotterdam United 7 nil, Burnley 5 nil, Newport County 4golas to 1, Swansea City 3goals to 2 and Brighton & Hove Albion 1goal to nothing in their third round, fourth round, fifth round, quarterfinal and semifinal matches respectively to reach the final.

The final was played between Manchester City and Watford. Man City thrashed Watford 6goals to nil to clinch their fourth trophy of the season. City gave Watford a run for their money, destroying them right from the beginning of the match till the very end.

This City team is formidable, strong, vibrant, and tasty for more success. This City team is ready to dominate for a long time, I wouldn’t be surprised if they replicate their achievements this season again next year.
