Five MPs through to second stage of Labour deputy contest

Labour leadership bid continues after a catastrophic defeat during the 2019 ‘Brexit election’.

As well as the leadership, the deputy position is also on the table and Dawn Butler MP has been one of the first to declare her intention to run as deputy. However, it became a struggle for her to garner the number of nominations from colleagues required to scale to next stage in order to make the ballot.

Yesterday, grassroots Labour members began a campaign to urge MPs to ensure the shadow secretary for women and equalities secures enough nominations to scale through.

5 MPs including Ms Dawn have now reached the required threshold to be nominated by MPs and MEPs for Deputy Leader.

Angela Rayner is the obvious frontrunner with 88 nominations followed by Ian Murray with 34. Dawn Butler at 29, Rosena Allin-Khan at 23, Richard Burgon managed to sneak through with 22 nominations while Khalid Mahmood withdrew from the race.

These successful candidates will now require either 5% of CLPs or at least 3 affiliates (at least 2 of which shall be a trade union) compromising 5% of affiliated membership to be successfully included on the ballot.

The final date for CLPs and affiliates to submit their nomination is Friday 14th February.
