Not quite long ago, in a mouth-watering end-to-end eventful encounter, Thiem defeated Zverev 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 in five thrilling sets to win his first-ever Grand Slam title. The Austrian becomes the first tennis man to come back from two sets down in a US Open singles in the Open era. 

He joins the likes of Pete Sampras (1990), Pat Rafter (1997), Marat Safin (2000), Lleyton Hewitt (2001), Andy Roddick (2003), Juan Martin del Porto (2009), Andy Murray (2012), and Marin Cilic (2014) as part of the players that have won their first Grand Slam title at the US Open in the last 30 years in Men’s singles category. 

The 27 years old tennis star was on three consecutive losses in the finals of tennis majors before his historical victory in the final of the 2020 US Open tournament: he was a runner-up at the Australian Open a few months ago and at the French Open in the year 2018 and 2019 successively. 

Thiem is the first tennis player apart from Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic to win a Grand Slam since the 2016 US Open. 

Dominic Thiem took to his Twitter page his success over Zverev: “It had to be like this – my career was always like the match today – many ups and downs and I love the way it turned out. This match truly deserved more than one champion and I’m sure that you @AlexZverev will also lift this trophy sometimes soon. Thank you for being a great rival and more so for being a real friend on tour.”

Thiem’s Road to his First Grand Slam Success:

The Austrian tennis player defeated Munar and Nagal 7-6, 6-3, ret. and 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 in the first round and second round respectively. 

Cilic forced him to a fourth set encounter in the round of 32, winning 6-2, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 to advance to the round of 16 where Thiem emphatically defeated Auger Aliassime 7-6, 6-1, 6-1. 

The quarterfinal match seemed too easy and one-sided for the new US Open champion as he comfortably beat de Minaur 6-1, 6-2, 6-4. 

Medvedev gave Dominic Thiem a run for his money in their semifinal match but the Austrian (Thiem) was too strong for the Russian tennis star to break in a 6-2, 7-6, 7-6 victory in favour of Thiem. 

After two straight defeats in the first two sets for Thiem against Zverev in the final match of this year’s edition of the US Open, it was already looking like a fourth consecutive tennis major final loss for Thiem but the super-sensational performance displayed by the 27 years old Austrian in the last three sets of the tie was enough to confirm him the winner of 2020 Men’s singles US Open champion. The final result of the 4 hours 2 minutes five-setter encounter was 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 in favour of Thiem.
