Women’s Singles Highlights: Bianca Andreescu becomes the First Canadian to win this tournament in 50 years.
 Men’s Singles Highlights: Rafael Nadal retains the title he won a year ago.

The Canadian Open is an annual tennis tournament held in Canada. It is known as Rogers cup and Tournoi de tennis du Canada (French) for sponsorship reasons. Canadian Open is the oldest tennis tournament after the US Open and Wimbledon Open. Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) named it Masters 1000 Event while in women’s competition it is called Premier 5 Tournament. This tournament is usually played on hard courts. This year (2019) edition is the 130th one. Men’s Singles and Women’s singles are played in IGA Stadium, Montreal and Aviva Centre, Toronto (Canada) respectively.

Canadian Open 2019 took centre stage on the 5th of August and ended on the 11th of August. The likes of Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem, Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Kei Nishikori, Kevin Anderson, Milos Raonic and Felix Auger-Aliassime took part in the Men’s singles. Naomi Osaka, Serena Williams, Simona Halep, Bianca Andreescu, and many other top female tennis stars participated in the Women’s singles of the campaign.

Rafael Nadal defended the title he won last year while 19 years old Bianca Andreescu rose to the occasion and won her hometown title for the first time. We will take you through the major highlights from both singles on this page.

Women’s Singles Highlights: Bianca Andreescu becomes the First Canadian to Win this Tournament in 50 years    

Bianca Andreescu is a 19-year-old girl from Mississauga, Ontario (Canada). Bianca defeated Serena Williams in the final 3 – 1 in the first Set but Serena injury couldn’t allow her to continue. The last time a Canadian won this award was in 1969 when Faye Urban of Windsor, Ontario, beat Vancouver’s, Vicki Berner. Bianca has been impressive so far in 2019 and this second WTA Premier Title of hers wasn’t s a fluke. Before this tournament, she has won a title in Indian Wells, got to Auckland final, Acapulco Semifinal and Miami Open Round of 16. According to a reliable source, Bianca Andreescu will now move into Top20 at a career-high No. 14 today. This will make her the highest-ranked teenager, overtaking Anisimova.

Bianca defeated Genie Bouchard (4-6, 6-1, 6-4) in the First Round, Daria Kasatkina (5-7, 6-2, 7 – 5) in the second Round, Kiki Bertens (6-1, 6-7, 6-4) in the third Round, Karolina Pliskova (6-0, 2-6, 6-4) in the Quarterfinals, Sofia Kenin (6-4, 7-6) in the Semifinal to have a Final against Serena Williams. The 19 years old young star victory in the Semifinal made her the only player to be on the court more than any other player at this year’s Rogers cup at 10hrs 54mins. Serena Williams, on the other hand, defeated Elise Mertens (6-3, 6-3) in the second round, Ekaterina Alexandrova (7-5, 6-4) in the third Round, Naomi Osaka (6-3, 6-4) in the Quarterfinals and Marie Bouzkova (1-6, 6-3, 6-3) in the Semifinal. The final between Bianca and Roger’s cup 3-times champion (Serena Williams) couldn’t last up to a Set because of injury S. Williams had. The injury forced her to retire the final and Bianca already winning 3-1 in the first Set was confirmed winner of the tournament. Bianca on winning the tournament said: “if I can do it if Serena can do it, anyone can do it. For you, just believe in yourself”. Serena Williams after the injury said: “It’s been a tough year, but we’ll keep going.”

Men’s Singles Highlights: Rafael Nadal Retains the Title He Won a Year Ago

The tournament’s top seed, Nadal added a 5th Rogers cup titles. He has previously won this tournament in 2018, 2013, 2008 and 2005 at age 19 over Andre Agassi – Nadal first ever hard court conquest. Rafael on ATP ranking is number two in the world.

Nadal defeated Daniel Evans (7-6(6), 6-4) in the Round of 32, Guido Pella (6-3, 6-4) in Round of 16 and Fabio Fognini (2-6, 6-1, 6-2) in Quarterfinals. The Semifinal match between Rafael Nadal and Gael Monfils didn’t hold due ankle sprain Monfils suffered which made him withdrew from the tournament. Second finalist, Daniil Medvedev, defeated Kyle Edmund (6-3, 6-0) in the Round of 32, Cristian Garin (6-3, 6-3) in the Round of 16, Dominic Thiem (6-3, 6-1) in the Quarterfinals and Karen Khachanov (6-1, 7-6(6)) in the Semifinals to have a match against Rafael Nadal in the Final. World No.2, Nadal, had an emphatic victory against Daniil Medvedev in the Final of Coupe Rogers beating him 6-3, 6-0 to win the title.
