Sadio Mane wins African footballer of the year award for the first time in his career.

Asisat Oshoala has now the African women’s footballer of the year award for the fourth time.

The long waited 2019 CAF awards event took centre stage at the Albatros Citadel Sahl Hasheesh Resort in Hurghada, Egypt yesterday’s night and it is the 28th edition in history. African players and officials that were outstanding in 2019 in each category of the awards are celebrated.

Sadio Mane with 477 votes got 152 and 210 more votes than his fellow Liverpool teammate (Mo Salah) and City’s Riyad Mahrez respectively, was crowned 2019 African Footballer of the Year. The Senegalese international footballer was instrumental for Liverpool last year as they won the Uefa Champions League, Uefa Super Cup and FIFA club world cup. The 2018/2019 Premier League golden boot winner managed 36 goals and 16 assists in 64 games in 2019. Mane and his fellow Lions of Teranga helped Senegal to a second-place finish at this year’s AFCON tournament.

Mane on receiving the award from the president of CAF had nothing but praise for his teammates at the club and international levels: “I am very happy and proud to win this award. I thank my teammates at the Senegal national team and also my club, Liverpool for their support.”

Asisat Oshoala is African Women’s Player of the Year for the fourth time. This means Oshoala has now equalled Perpetua Nkwocha’s record. Ajara Nchout and Thembi Kgatlana came second and third respectively with 30 votes and 104 votes lesser than Asisat Oshoala;’s 351 votes.

The Nigerian international expressed her gratitude on Twitter and thanked everyone that made this happen: “Grateful to be African Women’s player of the year for the 4th time. Thank God, my family, friends and fans for the support. Big shout out to my club, my management, teammates at both national team and club level and of course thanks to @CAF_Online for the opportunity.”

Riyad Mahrez’s added-time goal in a semifinal match against Nigeria at AFCON 2019 is named African Goal of the Year. The 95th-minute direct freekick strike from the Algerian international was what sent the super eagles home from the tournament.
