FG Suspends Twitter Operations in Nigeria.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has suspended, indefinitely, the operations of the microblogging and social networking service, Twitter, in the country.

This comes after Twitter deleted a tweet by Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari after  most Nigerians  reported the tweet because it had a genocidal reference to the Igbos, one of the nations major ethnic groups.

This also follows Nigeria government’s fight with Twitter after the microblogging platform gave Nigerians maximum support during their nationwide protest against police brutality and government negligence of its duties to the citizens.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed who had earlier last year wanted to cut off all social networks from Nigerians today went on with suspending Twitter following their decision to delete the threatening message of the President.

He announced the suspension in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday,4th June, over Twitter citing the ‘persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence’.

The Minister said the Federal Government has also directed the National Broadcasting l Commission (NBC) to immediately commence the process of licensing all OTT and social media operations in Nigeria.
