Instagram will begin to test hiding ‘likes’ in the US from this week. Hiding ‘like count’ is one of the social media giant’s move to become the safest place on the internet.

The test will initially begin on some users’ accounts in the U.S., says Instagram chief Adam Mosseri. The users in the test will be able to see the likes on their photos or videos, but no one else will.

The primary goal behind this move is to “depressurize” the platform and make it less competitive for young people, according to Mosseri.

The test has similarly been tested in Australia, Canada, Ireland and Japan with great success.
